A little anecdote for Life Insurance Awareness Month:
"She’s 34, he’s 37. Three kids. Combined income $100,000. $275,000 left to pay on their home.
If one of them dies prematurely, they have $250,000 of Life Insurance through work. They are feeling comfortable and protected if the unthinkable happens - 'She can pay off the house!', he says with confidence.
True - but, then what?
On $40,000, she raises 3 kids and still has to pay property tax, home and auto insurance, daycare/ school, food, clothing, co-pays on medical and dental, gas, etc., etc. And the wild card is health insurance - what if her portion of the premiums goes up or she has to change jobs?
What do vacations and saving for college look like in this scenario? Definitely different.
And she still has at least 30 years to go until retirement."
Friends,
I know this can be a sensitive subject, but given that this is National Life Insurance Awareness Month, I'm going to be blunt.
Many of us have a life insurance plan through work that equates to 1x-3x our annual salary, but financial experts recommend 10x.
And here's the kicker - if you're in reasonably good health, for $250,000 of coverage, the monthly cost will likely be less than what you spend at the coffee shop every week. Doesn't making sure you have enough Life Insurance seem worth the cost of a few cups of coffee?
It's true that it probably won’t happen to you, but on the other hand, there are a half-million GoFundMe accounts that testify people die without enough Life Insurance more often than we like to admit.
I was fortunate to be the son of an insurance agent, so I’ve had my own life insurance policies for my entire adult life. I know protecting my family at such a minimal cost was the right investment, and it feels good to know that I've provided for my loved ones regardless of what happens to me.
Life insurance my “I Fund Me” (and my family) account. Life insurance is love insurance.
If you feel like you've been putting off this important piece of your financial puzzle, don't wait another day - now is the time!
