National Veterinary Technician Week 10/11-10/17
Every year Dr. Dobbins and I put together a little “thank you”, a lunch and/or goodies for the team and post a Thank You via Facebook for all who follow us. We do our best to make it known how much we appreciate our technicians. This year is no different but sooo different at the same time. Of course the above will be done but I would like everyone to truly try to understand just how much the technicians hold together ANY veterinary hospital, ours included. This year started out like any other but by March 7th we were on a collision course with the COVID-19 pandemic and by St. Patrick’s Day our Pet ER lives were turned upside down. Hospital policies were changing daily to follow city and state orders, we were deemed essential(which is awesome but we already knew that 😉), and with it came what I’ve dubbed the COVID fallout. The work load placed on the technicians increased by over 30% nearly overnight. Balancing home lives (now husbands/wives/partners/significant others were forced to stay home), our kids were home from school, grandparents couldn’t be visited, socializing with our friends couldn’t happen after a rough shift (we all know venting helps us reset and come back for another day) but now our team was completely isolated. Working insanely busy shifts, managing patients, clients, emotions, stress, life and death and constant changes in hospital safety protocols and they ALL did it without complaint. Our team continued to show up EVERY. SINGLE. DAY, every single shift and they took care of each other. They were there for pet owners and their families in the most difficult of times. More importantly they still are and continue to do so 24/7. Our team continues to give it their all and that’s appreciated more than fancy words can express. Our Fresno Pet ER technicians have capes hidden under their scrubs!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

We are asking for community help as we search for two birds stolen from Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
A lesser sulphur-crested cockatoo and a Nicobar pigeon were stolen from the Zoo early Sunday morning. Security footage shows someone entering the Australian Asian Aviary at approximately 4:30 a.m. The person appears to cut the lock from the aviary doors, capture two birds and exit with them in a duffle bag. Both birds are long-term residents of the Zoo and of advanced age.
“Our bird zookeepers and entire team are deeply concerned for the safety of both of these animals. Due to their age, both require special care and treatment. We do not know the condition of either bird and we hope to get them back quickly so that our veterinary team can examine them and continue the care they require,” said Lyn Meyers, General Curator.
Zoo officials reported the crime and Fresno Police Department is leading the investigation. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s Safety and Security Manager at 559-470-6872.
Nicobar pigeons are listed as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN). Lesser-sulphur crested cockatoos are listed as critically endangered. Both species are legal to own as part of the pet trade.
“In addition to supporting the police in their investigation, we have also reached out to local veterinary hospitals and pet stores so they are aware that these beloved animals are missing from the Zoo,” said Scott Barton, CEO. “We are appealing to anyone in the community to provide any information that would result in the safe return of these two beloved animals.”

There's amazing whale encounters, and then there's what happened on Tuesday afternoon! "Snowflake" one of the most well-known Humpback Whales in Southern California, gave us the encounter of a lifetime! Capt. Dom and First Mate Taylor went out to do some filming, and never imagined the surreal day they would experience. This whale has special signifiance to Capt. Dom as he remembers this whale when it was still a calf with his mom "Chris". Snowflake is the whale in some of Capt. Dom's most viral drone videos, and is the first whale he ever saw breach! On this day, we got to encounter the most prolonged "mugging" we've ever experienced, with numerous spyhops, close passes, and even lunge feeding! It is always fun spending time with an old friend, and it sure seemed this whale was enjoying our company!
We are fortunate to still be open during these trying times amidst the pandemic, and if you are looking for a fun and safe activity to do with your family, we'd be thrilled to spend a few hours on the water with you!
