'Plant of the Day': Flame Flower-Talinum calycinum is a small cold-hardy native (to the Great Plains and part of the West) succulent that prefers well drained soils and fine gravel mulch. It has small purple/pink flowers on long thin stems.

'Plant of the Day': Texas Red Oak-Quercus texana or buckleyi grows to 35' and has gorgeous red to purple Fall foliage after deep green Summer foliage.

'Plant of the Day': Golden Currant-Ribes aureum is a deciduous shrub that provides wildlife habitat and interest throughout the year. In the Spring it produces fragrant blooms, in the Summer edible berries and in the Fall red foliage. These do best in partial shade and will spread.

'Plant of the Day':Chisos Rosewood-Vauquelinia corymbose ssp. angustifoia is a broadleaf evergreen very similar to Arizona Rosewood with narrower longer leaves. It can get 10' to 15' tall and flowers late Spring to early Summer with white flowers.

'Plant of the Day': Blackfoot Daisy-Melapodium leucanthum is a very drought tolerant, low maintenance perennial that thrives in intense heat yet still looks tidy. It blooms heavily in Spring and then often will bloom more with Summer monsoonal moisture.

'Plant of the Day": Wright's Beebush (or High Mass)-Aloysia wrightii (aka Lippia wrightii) is a medium sized deciduous native shrub with fragrant flowers that attract various pollinators. This plant prefers rocky or well-drained soils. This plant may take some perseverance to find.

'Plant of the day': Alder-leaf (or True) Mountain Mahogany- Cercocarpus montanus is a semi-evergreen shrub from 8' to 20' that produces beautiful feather-like seed heads. It grows best in full sun in well drained soils.

'Plant of the Day': Indian Rice grass-Achnatherum hymenoides is a very tough cool season native grass that is both heat tolerant and very cold hardy (-30 F). It produces beautiful airy seed heads in spring and early summer and then goes dormant. If there is a wet summer it will green up again in fall. It prefers well drained soils.

'Plant of the Day': 'Silver Peso' Texas Mountain Laurel-Sophora secundiflora (or Dermatophyllum secundiflorum) is a slow growing evergreen broadleaf tree/shrub selection that can get 10' to 25' tall and 10' to 15' wide. It produces wonderful fragrant purple flower clusters. In Albuquerque it is best to plant in a warm protected microclimate.

'Plant of the Day': 'Allee' Elm-Ulmus parviflora is of one of the relatively new hybrid Elms that are disease and insect resistant, drought tolerant and don't reseed like the invasive Siberian Elm. This variety can get up to 50' and is a great street tree or large shade tree. Other promising new Elm varieties are 'Emerald Sunshine','Frontier' and 'Athena'.
