If your car has an optional overdrive, the best advice is to leave it on in almost every circumstance. It reduces the RPMs required to drive at higher speeds and lessens the strain on the transmission.
Basically, catalytic converters fail for two reasons. Either this is caused by a leak due to the presence of rust and/or corrosion or internal plugging (caused by excessive carbon buildup or a collapsed baffle or catalyst).
If your engine is idling at a faster rate than normal, do not shift out of Park until it revs down; in addition, do not shift from Reverse to Drive, or into Park from Reverse or Drive while the car is still in motion to prevent transmission damage.
