Before the mini-bar, there was the full bar in the John Wayne Suite. Named for the iconic actor who stayed with us during the filming of the Alamo, John Wayne couldn’t exactly hang out in the St. Anthony Club for a few drinks. So our staff built a full bar for him in his suite.
You can experience a little of that old-time glamor by booking a stay in John Wayne’s old suite. We’ll even tell you a story of the route he took to sneak out to avoid the paparazzi waiting downstairs. Let’s just say, it was an action hero kind of move.

Last spring the gifted musicians who had participated in the Gurwitz International Piano Competition played our own beloved Steinway, reminding us of the deep appreciation for music in our city and the dedication it takes to play it well. Thanks to Musical Bridges Around the World for working with us to host these musicians for brunch.
The prestigious Gurwitz competition is named after an incredibly talented pianist in her own right, Ruth Jean Gurwitz. RJ, as she was known among friends, began playing piano by ear at age three, and she became an extraordinary and accomplished performer. In fact, she could play anything after hearing it once. Ruth Jean relished improvisational jazz and was a devotee of classical music.
She passed in 2015 leaving San Antonio a legacy of a deep appreciation for music played with tremendous skill, driving us to listen with rapt attention when our Peacock Alley Steinway comes to life, especially through the hands of a new generation of talented pianists.

-1 1/2 oz Reyka Vodka
-1 oz Meyer lemon
-1/4 oz Violet Liqueur
-1/4 oz Bar Hill Tom Cat Gin
-1/4 oz Sloe Gin
-1/2 oz hibiscus honey syrup

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we wanted to share one of our favorite holiday side recipes with you to make your day a bit easier. See below to learn how to make our Cranberry Sauce Base. If you want to learn more about our Ready to Serve Thanksgiving Feast, visit bit.ly/3nzy9Ww.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Yield: 2 1/4 cups
INGREDIENTS
1 cup (200 g) sugar
4-6 Fresh Squeezed Oranges with Zest Removed
4 cups (12 oz package) frozen cranberries
4 Whole Star Anise
2 Whole Cinnamon Sticks
METHOD
Rinse cranberries: Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them. Pick out and discard any damaged
or bruised cranberries.
Boil juice with sugar. Put the juice and sugar in a medium saucepan on high heat and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
Add cranberries, Star Anise, Cinnamon & cook until they burst: Add the cranberries to the pot and return to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until most of the cranberries have burst.
Let cool. Remove the pot from heat. Let cool completely at room temperature, then transfer to a bowl to chill in the refrigerator. Note that the cranberry sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

When one takes on a historic property like The St. Anthony Hotel, you take on the entirety of a property’s journey. You make decisions about what is important to save and what you are going to say about its history when you save some things and let others go.
It’s something we’re reflecting on as we celebrate our 112th anniversary. It’s been more than five years since we renovated and a big part of taking on the task was as much about unwinding change as it was about restoration. One of the most dramatic changes we chose to unwind at the St. Anthony Hotel was something you’d notice if you looked up.
These pillars and detailing of the moulding along the ceiling were covered up over the years. We decided not to save that drop ceiling. Instead, we chose to restore this beautiful entrance, uncovering the pillars and the shield carved into every one of them.
You might recognize that shield - it’s part of our brand. It’s something we hope you’ll notice the next time you visit.
