In 1799, Joseph Fox began writing and lecturing on dental diseases and treatments. He’s credited with inventing the first “fusible metal” that could be poured into tooth cavities to halt decay and prevent tooth loss.
It might seem strange to us today, but for centuries dentures couldn’t look natural. The introduction of vulcanite (hard vulcanized rubber) in the 1800s changed all that. For the first time, the false teeth could be held in place with something that resembled pink gums.
Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth. Make an appointment to see your dentist if your gums are painful, swollen or if they bleed when you brush your teeth. They will check the health of your gums and may take x-rays to check the condition of your jaw bone.
If the dentures do not line up properly, can they be fixed? Usually, this will not be an issue. The dentures are thoroughly tested for alignment and placement before molded and completed. Though, if they need to be fixed, this is a simple, easy process.
