In honor of #VeteransDay, we want to honor three very special doctors here at St. Luke’s. You may not know that Dr. Howard, Dr. Gooch, Dr. Rodriguez, and Dr. Mequio served our county before joining the St. Luke’s Family.

Before joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Howard was with the U.S. Army for eight years, most recently as Chief of Ophthalmology at Fort Meade in Maryland. Prior to that, he served as Chief of Ophthalmology and Refractive Surgery at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Co-Chief Resident at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas.

Dr. Gooch served 28 years in the US Air Force and held several esteemed roles including Chief, Aerospace Ophthalmology at the US Air Force Aeromedical Consultation Service from October 2006 to February 2014. He was Chief Consultant to the US Air Force Surgeon General for Aerospace Ophthalmology, and a Chief Flight Surgeon with over 1,000 total military flying hours in both fighter and transport aircraft. He retired from active duty in February 2014 at the rank of Colonel. Happy Veteran's Day Dr. Gooch, thank you for your service!

Dr. Rodriguez was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and volunteered to go with a U.S. Marine Corps infantry battalion overseas for 2 deployments, including Afghanistan, after 9/11.

Prior to joining St. Luke’s Cataract & Laser Institute, Dr. Mequio practiced in Stockton, California and served in the United States Air Force, at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. While active in the Air Force, he served as Chief of Ophthalmology at MacDill Air Force Base, where he also earned the Meritorious Service Medal. This honor is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves by outstanding acts of service to the Unites States.

Meet Dr. John Gooch! Dr. Gooch is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology including detection and treatment plans for cataracts, glaucoma, retinal conditions, and cornea diseases.
Dr. Gooch joined St. Luke’s at The Villages in 2016 after serving 28 years in the US Air Force holding several esteemed roles, including Chief Consultant to the US Air Force Surgeon General for Aerospace Ophthalmology, and retiring at the rank of Colonel.
