Taitum’s last morning on turtle patrol for the year! Enjoy the view!!
We are near the end of sea turtle nesting season here on Sanibel. This is the last nest Taitum (our very own turtle patrol guru) has in her zone. As soon as it hatches she won’t be doing sunrise turtle walks until next year!
There are a couple ways you can help during turtle season (or any season). First is to make sure you pick up all your trash at the end of each beach day. Tiny turtles often find these types of things to be obstacles to get to the Gulf. Also, many birds and fish can mistake trash for food and eat them. The second thing you can do to help is to fill in any holes you’ve made on the beach )including umbrella stand holes). Hatchlings can fall into these holes when going to the Gulf and they might not make it out. Be sure to also level any sand castles or sand piles you made to leave a smooth surface for the hatchlings to make their trek.

Sea turtle season is really winding down on the islands. Currently, we are monitoring 12 nests, a substantial difference from the record number of 669 nests on Sanibel and 268 nests on Captiva earlier this season.
So far, a total of 33,267 hatchlings have made it to sea!

Who has seen the skimmers at sunrise. Such a treat for me (Jeanne) I am a sleepy head but this winter I forced myself to get up and take in the most amazing sites at dawn. Skimmers were jump up and down exciting for me. When you visit get out and see just before sunrise were my personal best times. Such a treat! While the Black Skimmer’s eyes can see you staring just fine, the bird is actually known for its sense of touch. Black Skimmers are able to hunt by grazing the water with open mouths and grabbing fish when they feel them. This allows for hunting both during the day and night. The three existing species of skimmers are the only birds in the world known to hunt this way.
