Is It OK to Visit Older Family as Coronavirus Orders Ease?
Adopt-A-Native-Elder

We are in a special window of time with the Elders we serve. The Elders in their 80’s and 90’s are the last generation of traditional indigenous people in the United States. These Elders never entered our society, they dress traditionally, practice traditional ceremonies, and speak only their Navajo language. Many of the Elders have never left the Navajo reservation and the only life they know is one of solitude and self-reliance in the desert of the South West. These Elder’s needs are simple, but meeting their needs is vital to their survival.
Adopt A Native Elder has served these Elder’s for the last thirty six years with a single goal, to allow the Elders to age with dignity in their traditional way on their homelands. Today we serve 850 Traditional Navajo Elders over the age of 75.
Thank you for supporting the Elders we cherish. To donate today, follow the link below.

Emotional well-being is one of the pillars of our overall well-being concept. Beyond the simple question of if one is happy or sad, emotional well-being is really about our ability to manage stress and be resilient in the face of large and small adversity.
Stress management for seniors can be difficult and we often see seniors withdrawing from perceived sources of stress rather than addressing the problem. Withdrawing increases isolation and promotes a passivity about life that is not healthy.
After many years in the home care business I strongly believe the best support for emotional well being for a senior living alone is a meaningful and enjoyable relationship with a caregiver. Having help for as little as 8 hours weekly can make a tremendous difference in a clients ability to manage stress and deal with challenges. Just a small amount of respectful and caring help makes living at home the best and safest option for the vast majority of seniors.
What is Overall Well-being?
A Google search for overall wellness or well being brings up a lot of information. The definition I prefer, especially when we are talking about the well being of seniors, is this one.
“Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving”
Generally when we talk about well being we talk about the various dimensions, or pillars that form the concept as a whole. As with ADL’s, there are different ideas about how many dimensions, or pillars we talk about. At RedBud we focus on a short list of of six pillars. These are
1. Physical Well-being
2. Emotional Well-being
3. Social Well-being
4. Intellectual Wellbeing
5. Environmental Wellbeing
6. Spiritual Well-being.
What is the goal of homecare? Families mostly reach out to us when there is an acute problem or situation that needs attention, but once that need is addressed, what is the goal of an ongoing schedule of home care for a senior loved one?
At RedBud our goal is to provide overall wellness for our clients. We do this by addressing specific needs first, and then moving on to create conditions for achieving overall wellness. Over the next weeks I am going to describe the process we have developed for reaching the goal of overall wellness.
For the RedBud caregivers who follow this page, I hope this can be a helpful reminder of why we do the things we do. For clients and partners, I hope this can help you understand our philosophy as home care providers.
