It’s that time of year again! With temperatures dropping, families--mine included--are enjoying their first fires of the year.
It’s easy to get lost in the magic of a crackling fire or comforting warmth of a wood stove - and who wouldn’t? But before you kick back and relax, it’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure you and your family can enjoy your indoor fires safely. If you have a fireplace, please have it cleaned before you use it.
Consider these statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration:
In 2018, there were an estimated 379,600 residential building fires causing more than $8 billion in damage and losses.
2,790 civilians died and an additional 11,525 were injured as a result.
Nothing is more comforting than peace-of-mind. Stay safe as you enjoy your fireplace this holiday season!
No one likes planning for the worst, but it’s always wise to be prepared. Deer-vehicle collisions are on the rise. November and December are the most likely months for a crash involving a deer and a vehicle.
Collisions with deer and other large animals can cause significant damage to vehicles. Here are some proactive driving tips to help avoid damage to your vehicle from hitting a large animal.
-Be alert from sunset to midnight and in the hours before and after sunrise.
-Drive carefully through areas with high deer populations and deer-crossing zones. Deer typically travel in numbers, so where you see one, there are likely others.
-Slow down and blow your horn to frighten a deer away.
-Stay in your lane. Many deer-related accidents are caused by one car hitting another while attempting to avoid an animal.
-Do not rely on deer whistles to repel deer.

I came across an interesting study from ValuePenguin in which the authors studied the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s crash data as it relates to specific cars, and compared it with national premium averages on those vehicles.
I thought you might be interested to see the data—I know I was surprised by several on this list! Of course, keep in mind that these numbers are based on national averages, and that auto insurance rates differ based on a variety of factors.
