“I take care of children with cancer and disorders of the blood. I’m pretty proud of our team. There’s the bugs and drugs part of it where you give medicines and you treat the primary problem. But these are disorders that impact whole families. They’re very serious diagnoses and you need to be able to treat the whole family. The one word to describe it is a partnership. The families are not alone. I think every day is really sort of a defining day. Children are very resilient even when they are very ill. You learn a lot from them and it’s very inspiring for me to be around every day. It’s always nice to get photos from people who are in college, photos of patients you’ve taken care of who now have children. “My early sport experiences inspired my interest in a career in science. Growing up, I was a competitive volleyball player in China. When I was 12, I was recruited to play competitive volleyball because I was taller than the average Chinese girl. I played throughout college and experienced several sports-related injuries during my athletic career. During my senior year of high school, I almost became a professional player, but ironically, I was not tall enough. I was told that if I were 3 cm taller, I would have made it. Although it was a big disappointment, my experience as a competitive athlete led to my research interest and career in sports injury. I embrace the concept that all women are unique and have their own strengths. Collectively, we can contribute our immeasurably enriched expertise and experiences to our scientific community and make a significant impact on policy, practice and science.” -Ginger Yang, Principal Investigator, Center for Injury Research and Policy #WomenInScienceDay *Photo taken prior to COVID-19

“Our research focuses on the molecular pathways by which the heart normally forms and then translating that to our patients that we see with congenital heart disease and trying to understand if there are any mutations in these genes that may be contributing to their congenital heart defects. We actually took nine families with congenital heart disease and we think we may have identified for three of the families, the mutation in the gene that’s causing their disease. That’s one of the more exciting things that we have recently found.” -Dr. Vidu Garg, Director, Center for Cardiovascular Research #NCHHeart #HeartMonth *Photo taken prior to COVID-19 NATIONWIDECHILDRENSHOSPITAL.TUMBLR.COM Nationwide Children's Hospital

Hope. It’s what brought the Riddle family to Nationwide Children’s Hospital from 9,500 miles away. Diagnosed with Batten disease in Sydney, Australia, Tayla’s parents were told there was nothing that could be done. Their daughter would slowly lose the ability to walk, talk, see and swallow and she would likely die before she turned 12 years old. It was an outcome her parents refused to accept. #RareDiseaseDay

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have not always felt supported. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, I was not only wholeheartedly accepted, but my story was also celebrated. “Poverty was definitely a big part of my mind when I was thinking about going into social work. Definitely equality. Breaking down barriers. I was influenced personally, too. I was born in Hong Kong and became a citizen after I moved to America when I was two years old. My parents were very sacrificial. They wanted an opportunity for my sister and I to have a better education. And actually they weren’t really planning to come to America. A family member whom had already immigrated guided them to give it a try. They did a test drive and thought, if the children can adjust, we’ll stay. Otherwise we’ll book it back to Hong Kong. We stayed.” -Ming, Social Work, Endocrinology #SocialWorkDay NATIONWIDECHILDRENSHOSPITAL.TUMBLR.COM Nationwide Children's Hospital
