Today, a group of nurses proved that our ministry to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ goes beyond state lines. They left CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth this afternoon for Lake Charles, Louisiana to help one of our sister hospitals, CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick. Leaders and fellow Associates gathered at St. Elizabeth today to send them off with a blessing and prayer. We thank them for selflessly serving in Southwest Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura and are proud of the care and relief that they will provide to those patients and Associates. They are true #CHRISTUSheroes!
Our communities deserve excellent, compassionate care close to home and we strive to provide it every day. We are always grateful when our patients confirm that commitment. Recently, Sheila Cowan shared her thoughts on a recent visit to CHRISTUS Family Practice Clinic – Jasper on social media. In addition to the “very professional and excellent care” she says she received, Sheila was sure to mention our team members by name. She says, “From Toni at [the] front desk, Nurse Monica to NP Barnes, it was the best experience that I have had in Jasper in years.” We thank Sheila for her kind words. Kudos to this team for their great work! 💜

This week, our teams here at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System sent more loads of supplies – including toiletries, diapers, cleaning supplies and tarps – to our family in Lake Charles. The SWLA teams are doing extraordinary work under difficult circumstances and we are proud to support them! 💜

As we pray for the safety of the entire Southwestern Louisiana community, we continue to provide as much support as they have given to us during challenging times. Today, our NICU Transport Team is making its first trip to Lake Charles to pick up NICU babies who will continue to receive the treatment they need at St. Elizabeth. “I can honestly say this was the best experience I have ever had in the ER for myself and family members.” These were just some of the words shared by Debbie Foster after her recent treatment at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Jasper Memorial. In July, Foster, who works in sales at KJAS Radio in Jasper, developed symptoms of COVID-19. After weeks of a burning sensation in her lungs and back, she decided to go to the Emergency Room at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Jasper Memorial. In Foster’s words, “Thank the Lord, I did! They helped give me answers to my questions and the doctors’ treatment helped. In fact, the burning has gone away and hasn't returned.” Thank you, Debbie, for sharing your story and recommending CHRISTUS Jasper Memorial! We take great honor and pride in providing high quality, compassionate care to everyone in the communities we serve. We are here for you! During a year that has brought unprecedented challenges, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System is proud to make a fitting donation to Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas and the Southeast Texas Food Bank to benefit our community. Ahead of this holiday season, leaders presented $10,000 checks to these two local non-profit organizations who annually provide vital services to the region, and more significantly, during this pandemic.

We would like to thank two special young ladies for their thoughtful donation in support of our forensic nursing program. Twin sisters Kylie and Kaitlin, who recently turned 18, hosted a #BuildABear party and then gave the stuffed animals to our hospital. They will be given to children who our forensic nurses will evaluate for sexual abuse. The nurses in this program are specially trained and certified to care for patients who have experienced various types of trauma, abuse or neglect. More than 70% of the patients treated by our forensic nurses are children, so this donation is extremely helpful. Program manager Angela Dillahunty thanked Kylie and Kaitlin, along with their mother Stephanie Massey, for their kindness and generosity! 💜🧸
With Thanksgiving, we pray for blessings and peace from our CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Family to yours.
For many in our region 2020 has been a difficult year. CHRISTUS Southeast Texas and two of our community partners, Catholic Charities and The Food Bank of Southeast Texas , are stepping in to make the holiday season a little easier. Last month we presented a check to these two outstanding organizations to aid in their mission to fight food insecurity in our communties. Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas will use its donation at its client choice food pantry, Market to HOPE (Help Other People Eat) to help meet the increased need for food support for area families. The goal is to serve up to 630 individuals each week. Southeast Texas Food Bank will also use the funds for food and related infrastructure costs to distribute to its partner agencies in eight counties throughout the region.
During this holiday season, we will still be operating under our COVID Visitor Policy of one visitor at a time per patient. However, we will have adjusted visitor hours on Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. On these days visitation will be available from 8:00am-4:30pm. For more information about our visitor policy please visit https://bit.ly/3q0PZng

We are grateful to the State of Texas for allocating the vaccine doses we have to administer, which first arrived at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth on Dec. 17. As a result, we are following the state’s guidelines regarding who can receive them and are working hard to deliver them as effectively and quickly as possible to those groups. Right now, the state has guided us to provide vaccination to health care workers in Phase 1A. We have gone through our initial supplies and still have many more healthcare providers and community first responders yet to vaccinate. Accordingly, this group and other will be our continued focus with the vaccines supplied to our hospital. See our full statement at https://www.christushealth.org/southeast-texas/about/news/covid-19
