The purpose of prisons is to punish and provide training for reinstatement to the real world. As an educated and wealthy society, we cannot just have a barbaric system without guidance and rules. The SC prison system should house those who CANNOT conform to our rules and laws. However, it is not a catchall for everyone that has problems which cause limited bad judgment. If we want so many in jail then we must have a system that meets the basic needs and safety of prisoners. SC ranks first in per capita deaths in prisons. It can be directly blamed on failure to provide enough officers and security. Many people in prison need help – we cannot afford to lock up so many who can be productive in society who need drug addiction help, etc.
